The Challenge

The client required a clean and test room that could maintain a fully controlled internal environment at all times – including during live testing cycles. Every element of the build, from wall construction through to lighting, ventilation, and access, needed to function as a fully integrated system rather than a collection of standalone components.

A key design challenge centred on access. The client needed to move large items into the room via a 3000 x 3000mm opening, while also allowing routine personnel access throughout the working day – without compromising the sealed integrity of the controlled environment. This required a complete airlock arrangement between the factory floor and the clean room itself.

The Unitech Solution

Unitech Machinery designed and delivered a fully bespoke industrial clean room installation, engineered around the client’s precise operational requirements.

Insulated Panel Construction

The room was constructed using 60mm Kingspan Quadcore cold store wall panels throughout, with 175mm LEC insulated panels to the roof. This combination delivers excellent thermal performance, structural integrity, and a smooth, cleanable internal surface suited to a controlled testing environment.

Access & Airlock System

A 2m x 3.6m vestibule was constructed on the entry side of the room, incorporating a fast-action roller shutter door that creates a fully enclosed airlock between the factory floor and the clean room. A personnel door within the vestibule provides routine day-to-day access. The main 3000 x 3000mm sliding door – which opens internally to preserve the integrity of the vestibule envelope – is used for the movement of larger equipment and test items.

Lighting

Specialist industrial LED lighting modules were installed throughout at 45 degrees with reflectors and toughened glazing panels, delivering bright, uniform illumination across the full length of the room. Emergency lighting was also integrated as standard throughout the facility.

Ventilation

Ceiling-mounted guarded rotating fans provide continuous air circulation within the room, supporting contamination control throughout each testing cycle.

Testing Status System

A Lasermet “Testing in Progress” LED status indicator was installed above the roller shutter entrance, providing a clear visual warning to personnel approaching the facility during an active test cycle.

The Result

The completed facility gives the client a professional, fully sealed clean and test room environment built precisely to their operational specification. The Kingspan Quadcore panel system ensures excellent long-term thermal and structural performance, while the vestibule airlock and fast-action roller shutter significantly reduce contamination risk between testing cycles. The installation was delivered on time and to specification, giving the client complete confidence in their new testing environment from day one.
