Unitech Machinery was commissioned by Mec-A-Tec to deliver a complex water wash spray booth installation and finishing solution for their new production facility. As a specialist division of the CarnaudMetalbox Group, Mec-A-Tec requires equipment that meets rigorous engineering standards. The goal was to bring their finishing capabilities in-house to maintain total control over quality and lead times.
The project focused on handling complex geometries, such as conveyor frames and ‘can twists’, which demand a flawless finish for the food and beverage packaging industry. The new facility includes a high-efficiency Water Wash Spray Booth and a purpose-built Curing Oven, ensuring a clean application and durable cure for every component.
The Challenge: Coating Complex Geometries
Mec-A-Tec supplies critical conveyor systems to the global canning industry. These components often have intricate shapes that are difficult to coat evenly. The client required a solution that could:
- Handle high volumes of overspray generated by spraying open frames and twists.
- Ensure a hard, chip-resistant finish suitable for industrial environments.
- Fit seamlessly into their new production facility layout.
The Unitech Solution
We designed a turnkey package that addresses both the application and curing stages of the process.
1. High-Efficiency Water Wash Booth
We selected a water wash system for this application because of the component shape. When spraying open frames, overspray is inevitable. The water wash booth utilizes a continuous water curtain to “scrub” paint particulate from the air. Unlike dry filters which clog rapidly with heavy overspray, the water wash system allows for longer continuous spraying runs, ensuring production continuity and a cleaner environment for the operator.
2. Precision Box Curing Oven
To ensure the coatings are cured to a durable finish, we installed a custom industrial box oven. Featuring high-velocity airflow, the oven eliminates cold spots, ensuring every part of the complex conveyor frames cures at the same rate. The modulating burner system ensures precise temperature control while minimizing gas consumption.
The Result: Seamless Water Wash Spray Booth Installation
The water wash spray booth installation was successfully completed within Mec-A-Tec’s new premises. By bringing this capability in-house with Unitech equipment, Mec-A-Tec now has total control over their finishing quality, matching their reputation for world-class engineering.
